Never rule out Madrid – Valverde

first_imgBarcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde warned against underestimating the Madrid teams in this season’s LaLiga after his side beat Getafe 2-1 to go five points clear at the top of the table. On a day when second-placed Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Sevilla and Real Madrid suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Real Sociedad, Barcelona edged a tight game at Coliseum Alfonso Perez to open up a gap on their rivals.Memorable first-half goals from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez put Barcelona in charge before Jaime Mata scored in a brave Getafe fightback, but the champions proved too strong for Pepe Bordalas’ side. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Valverde’s future at Camp Nou had been the subject of speculation in the week leading up to the game and, having delivered a result that leaves his position and the Blaugrana’s title defence looking all the more secure, he issued words of caution.”It has been a hard match,” Valverde told reporters. “We knew it would be as well.”We withstood the challenge and picked up more points than those behind us.”For us it was crucial to be focused. Getafe is a strong rival and pressured us a lot. We have to recognise that they had chances too.”One very good reason to go to sleep happy tonight— FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) January 6, 2019Getafe are seventh in the table, just five points behind fifth-placed Real Madrid, whose chances of pushing Barcelona for the title appear to be fading.Valverde underlined Getafe’s quality while indicating that he felt the title race remains open.”Getafe is an uncomfortable rival for Barca and for anyone,” he said. “They are experts in winning second balls. They are a hard and difficult team, as the table reflects.”I don’t think too much on the rest of the results. I think about what we have in front of us and never rule out the teams in Madrid or the rest.”Valverde’s opposite number Bordalas lamented the decisions that went against his side, who had a goal ruled out in the ninth minute.Getafe could have been playing against 10 men after Arthur appeared to connect an elbow with Angel Rodriguez’s face but the Barcelona midfielder escaped with only a booking.Mata also missed a glorious opportunity to equalise after rounding Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and Bordalas said: “The feeling is bittersweet.”We have had occasions: one goal annulled, a possible red card. We feel very much harmed.”We made a great match. It is true that they have Messi, the best player in the world, but all in all I think that we have been able to play in the match.”We had clear chances that we could not take.”last_img read more

‘Wenger would help Arsenal land top talent’

first_imgArsene Wenger’s presence at Arsenal could help the club to attract top transfer targets, says Charlie Nicholas, with the Gunners urged to consider bringing an iconic former boss back to the club. After 22 years of loyal service in north London, a legendary Frenchman walked away from Emirates Stadium in the summer of 2018.Unai Emery was appointed as his successor and charged with the task of returning Champions League football to the club. Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? He failed to deliver on that remit last season and is reported to have been given a limited budget with which to try and strengthen his squad.Getting deals over the line is proving to be tricky, amid links to the likes of Celtic full-back Kieran Tierney and Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba, but Nicholas believes Wenger could aid the cause. The former Arsenal forward told Sky Sports Transfer Talk Podcast: “Sometimes I like to throw one [an idea] in every now and then, like we all do.“It’s not just because I’m trying to be controversial but Arsene Wenger has been out of a job for a long time.“Now, Arsenal tried to keep him as a director of football or on the hierarchy because he can help guide us in case there was trouble that was going to be there for the club.“Bayern Munich have had [Karl-Heinz] Rummenigge and [Franz] Beckenbauer, Man Utd have Alex Ferguson, Liverpool have King Kenny Dalglish.“We missed out on that because Arsene said he wanted to take a break. But he’s been out of a job a long time.“I would have simply have said: ‘Well, why don’t you go after Arsene Wenger?’.“Wenger still knows the game inside out and people will say ‘well, he wanted to leave Arsenal’.“Yeah he did at that time as a manager, it was painful because he felt hurt and damaged. But I still think he loves the club.“If Arsene Wenger sits in a room with these different players that we are trying to attract, if he’s sitting in a room representing Arsenal Football Club, I think we’d get more of a say and more of a feel that they can generally attract these players.”Wenger has opened the door for a return to English football to be made, but claims to be in no rush to find another role after enjoying 12 months away from the dugout.last_img read more

College Football Power Losing Quarterback To Transfer

first_imgFans of the Georgia Bulldogs watch play against the Mississippi Rebels.ATHENS, GA – SEPTEMBER 29: Fans of the Georgia Bulldogs watch play against the Mississippi Rebels at Sanford Stadium on September 29, 2007 in Athens, Georgia. Georgia won 45 – 17. (Photo by Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images)Stetson Bennett transfer update: the Georgia preferred walk-on is officially leaving Athens. Bennett, a lifelong Georgia fan, found himself behind incumbent starter Jake Fromm, who led the team to the national championship game last season, and No. 2 recruit Justin Fields on the depth chart. He believes he is good enough to start for an FBS club.Kirby Smart revealed that the redshirt freshman was considering a transfer earlier in the week. Bennett served as scout team quarterback last season, and really impressed the coaching staff, and was set to be the third-stringer for the Bulldogs this season. There was also a chance that he’d be placed on scholarship.Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, whose unit had to face Bennett every week in practice, was effusive in his praise of the young quarterback. From The Telegraph:During the postseason, Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker was complimentary of Bennett’s ability to challenge his unit on a daily basis.“Stetson Bennett is a beast, man,” Tucker said. “Stetson Bennett puts a lot of pressure on our defense because he is extremely quick, he’s fast and he can throw. He can throw in the pocket and he can throw on the run, and he’s very, very competitive.”Now, the Stetson Bennett transfer is official.Bennett reportedly called the decision “the toughest of his life.” DawgNation spoke to him about the transfer:“The dream is to play,” Bennett said. “It was cool being at Georgia. I loved sharing those moments at Georgia last year but the dream is to play. It just wasn’t the same growing up a boy who wanted to play at Georgia if you are not out there. That’s the thing. It was cool. I would love to be the starting quarterback at the University of Georgia. But just being there and being on the team. That’s not good enough for me.”“I’m going to go play somewhere,” Bennett said. “I think that’s evolved to more of the dream than just being somewhere at a place because you grew up loving it. I think now the dream is to go play and go win championships somewhere. That’s what I feel like. I am going to go chase that dream now.”Bennett was a relatively unheralded high school recruit, but did have offers from schools like Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss, as well as some Ivy League options. Instead of looking at programs like that, he will go the junior college route, and hope to expand his options. He says head coach Kirby Smart has even assisted him in finding some good junior college options.“It was really nice,” Bennett said. “That just showed me more of what I already knew about Coach Smart. That showed me even if I wasn’t going to be here that he still cares about me and whatever I’m going to turn out to be.”[…]“I’m thinking somewhere in Mississippi,” he said. “I am going to take some visits out there. Or I already have visited them. I’m thinking it might be Jones Community College or Gulf Coast Community College.”This Stetson Bennett transfer has a much bigger impact than your average walk-on leaving a program. It leaves a very big hole in the depth chart behind Fromm and Fields, the program’s only two scholarship players at the quarterback position.[DawgNation]last_img read more

(Photo by Kevin C. The Wolverines control their own destiny in the Big Ten – if they win out the regular season and claim the Big Ten Championship, there’s no reason they won’t be a playoff team.Brady Quinn and Tim Brando, however, did not feel that the Wolverines would be going to the playoffs. Instead, the pair though that LSU would make it..@NDFootball, @ClemsonFB and @AlabamaFTBL are locks through Week 8. Meanwhile, @UMichFootball and @LSUfootball battle it out for that 4th Playoff Picks spot. ?— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) October 25, 2018Quinn had LSU at No. 4 and Notre Dame at No. 3, while Brando had those two reversed.LSU have a slightly harder path to the College Football Playoffs. Having lost to Florida already, the Tigers would need to beat Alabama on November 3rd and/or win the SEC Championship afterwards in order to have a chance.Ultimately, all six analysts held firm that Clemson would be No. 2 and Alabama would be the ultimate winner at No. 1.last_img read more

Another report the following year documented more than 1,000 doping cases across dozens of sports, notably at the Winter Olympics that Russia hosted in Sochi in 2014.advertisementAlso Read | WADA lifts suspension on Russia’s anti-doping agency but with conditionsAlso Read | Indian cricketers providing whereabouts details to WADA since 2017For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter for Sports news, scores and updates.Get real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story? first_imgFrench Open 2019: Nadal eases into 3rd round, Nishikori downs TsongaWhile Rafael Nadal, chasing a record-extending 12th title at French Open demolished German qualifier Yannick Maden in straight sets, Kei Nishikori needed 4 sets to beat local hope Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second-round match on Wednesday.advertisement Associated Press ParisMay 29, 2019UPDATED: May 29, 2019 20:18 IST Nadal will be up against 27th-seeded David Goffin in the third round of French Open 2019 (AP Photo)HIGHLIGHTSRafael Nadal eased into the 3rd round after 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 win7th seed Kei Nishikori rallied to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4Garbine Muguruza, Sloane Stephens posted straight-set winsAnother German qualifier named Yannick, another easy win for Rafael Nadal.Chasing a record-extending 12th title at the French Open, Nadal posted a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 win over Yannick Maden on Wednesday to reach the third round of the clay-court Grand Slam.Nadal lost only six games in the first round against Yannick Hanfmann. He was on the verge of doing even better on Wednesday but lost focus briefly in the third set and dropped his serve twice.”That’s just about concentration,” Nadal said. “Because the feeling on the match has been positive. Positive thing is, every time that I (made) the mistake, then I had the break again, and that’s the good news.”In the next round, Nadal will be up against 27th-seeded David Goffin.Sixth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas also advanced, making it to the third round at Roland Garros for the first time. The Greek player overcame a slow start to beat Hugo Dellien of Bolivia 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 7-5.Also, seventh-seeded Kei Nishikori rallied to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.Muguruza, Stephens posted straight-set winsIn the women’s draw, former champion Garbine Muguruza and last year’s runner-up Sloane Stephens both posted straight-set wins to progress to the third round. On a sunny morning in the French capital, Muguruza beat Johanna Larsson 6-4, 6-1 on Court Suzanne Lenglen.Seeded 19th this year, Muguruza won the title at Roland Garros in 2016 when she upset Serena Williams in the final. The Spanish player is expected to face tougher opposition in her next match against ninth-seeded Elina Svitolina, who progressed to the third round without hitting a shot.advertisementSvitolina was set to play 67th-ranked Kateryna Kozlova but organizers said the Ukrainian player withdrew with a virus.Stephens, who lost to Simona Halep in last year’s final, needed a bit more time to defeat gritty but error-prone Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-1, 7-6 (3).In a match that featured 11 breaks of serve, Stephens could not hold on to a 3-0 lead in the second set and Sorribes Tormo twice had the opportunity to level at 1-set apiece on her serve. A turning point came in the 11th game when the 22-year-old Spaniard hit two consecutive double-faults to drop serve. The seventh-seeded Stephens hit a series of winners in the tiebreaker and sealed the match with a backhand down the line.”Just decided to keep it exciting, to play a bit longer on that court,” Stephens joked. “I missed it from last year.”Also Read | Rohan Bopanna and Marius Copil knock out 6th seeds from French OpenAlso Read | French Open 2019: Naomi Osaka, Alexander Zverev survive 1st-round scaresAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter for Sports news, scores and updates.Get real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story? World Cup 2019: Vijay Shankar close to playing a big knock for us, says Virat Kohli

first_imgWorld Cup 2019: Vijay Shankar close to playing a big knock for us, says Virat KohliWorld Cup 2019: Vijay Shankar replaced injured Shikhar Dhawan but has failed to impress with the bat as he managed scores of 29 against Afghanistan and 14 versus the West Indies.advertisement Press Trust of India BirminghamJune 29, 2019UPDATED: June 29, 2019 19:34 IST Vijay Shankar has failed to impress with the bat. (AP Photo)HIGHLIGHTSVirat Kohli has backed Vijay Shankar to score a good knockVijay Shankar had replaced Shikhar Dhawan in India’s squadShankar scored 29 against Afghanistan and was involved in a 50 plus stand with his skipperPutting his weight firmly behind under-pressure Vijay Shankar, skipper Virat Kohli Saturday said the all-rounder is very close to playing a defining knock for India in the World Cup.Kohli’s vote of confidence ahead of the England game means that Rishabh Pant will have to wait to get his first game.Asked about his assessment of Shankar, Kohli said, “It’s a strange one because he had a decent game against Pakistan. I think against Afghanistan on that pitch he looked really assured. Shot selection, again, we discussed with him for that game. Last game, again, he came out, he looked really good, and he got a beautiful ball from Kemar Roach.”Shankar scored 29 against Afghanistan and was involved in a 50 plus stand with his skipper.”So you can’t really sit down and pinpoint things. But I personally felt he looked really solid. There’s not much that needs to be tinkered. Sometimes in cricket you just need a bit of luck to get over from 30 to 60, and then you play a defining knock for the team.”He’s very close to that, and we’re very confident he’s going to end up playing that kind of knock for us,” said the world number one batsman. He did not read much into Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s slow strike-rate in the previous couple of games and Kohli once again reiterated that the former skipper “knows what he’s doing”.”I don’t think that he’s ever been a cricketer that’s ever had the need to be told what exactly he needs to do,” he made his point clear.advertisement”What we experience and what we know inside the change room is the most important thing to us, and we have total belief in him (Dhoni), and he stood up for the team many times, especially if you look at this calendar year and the kind of performances he’s given. I don’t think it’s fair to point out one or two performances which anyone can falter with the bat,” Kohli was certainly not pleased with the criticism aimed at Dhoni. The middle-order issues remain and Kohli’s defence for the under-fire number 4, 5 and 6 is “lack of balls due to good show from the top-order” on most occasions.”Look, that discussion is always going to go on because we’ve had such a strong top order that these guys have hardly had a chance to bat. When they bat, out of four times, if once or twice it doesn’t come off, then we feel like, oh, it’s not a strong middle-order, but we overlook the times that it has come good,” he added.”If you look at the first three games that we played, the contribution was absolutely fine. We were getting 300 plus, and no one said anything. We were like, oh, this is an amazing batting order.”Then one game where we could not accelerate as much, everyone says that maybe it’s not as strong,” he made his displeasure clear. However this argument from the skipper doesn’t hold much ground since the groundwork in most occasions was done by Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Kohli, himself. Also Read | World Cup 2019: MS Dhoni must bat at No. 4, says Dean JonesAlso Read | World Cup 2019: Dear Virat and Ravi, please don’t drop Vijay Shankar, tweets Kevin PietersenAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to Like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter for Sports news, scores and updates.Get real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story?
