Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde warned against underestimating the Madrid teams in this season’s LaLiga after his side beat Getafe 2-1 to go five points clear at the top of the table. On a day when second-placed Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw by Sevilla and Real Madrid suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Real Sociedad, Barcelona edged a tight game at Coliseum Alfonso Perez to open up a gap on their rivals.Memorable first-half goals from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez put Barcelona in charge before Jaime Mata scored in a brave Getafe fightback, but the champions proved too strong for Pepe Bordalas’ side. Valverde’s future at Camp Nou had been the subject of speculation in the week leading up to the game and, having delivered a result that leaves his position and the Blaugrana’s title defence looking all the more secure, he issued words of caution.”It has been a hard match,” Valverde told reporters. “We knew it would be as well.”We withstood the challenge and picked up more points than those behind us.”For us it was crucial to be focused. Getafe is a strong rival and pressured us a lot. We have to recognise that they had chances too.”One very good reason to go to sleep happy tonight pic.twitter.com/S7yJlfDd0f— FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) January 6, 2019Getafe are seventh in the table, just five points behind fifth-placed Real Madrid, whose chances of pushing Barcelona for the title appear to be fading.Valverde underlined Getafe’s quality while indicating that he felt the title race remains open.”Getafe is an uncomfortable rival for Barca and for anyone,” he said. “They are experts in winning second balls. They are a hard and difficult team, as the table reflects.”I don’t think too much on the rest of the results. I think about what we have in front of us and never rule out the teams in Madrid or the rest.”Valverde’s opposite number Bordalas lamented the decisions that went against his side, who had a goal ruled out in the ninth minute.Getafe could have been playing against 10 men after Arthur appeared to connect an elbow with Angel Rodriguez’s face but the Barcelona midfielder escaped with only a booking.Mata also missed a glorious opportunity to equalise after rounding Barca goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and Bordalas said: “The feeling is bittersweet.”We have had occasions: one goal annulled, a possible red card. We feel very much harmed.”We made a great match. It is true that they have Messi, the best player in the world, but all in all I think that we have been able to play in the match.”We had clear chances that we could not take.”
Arsene Wenger’s presence at Arsenal could help the club to attract top transfer targets, says Charlie Nicholas, with the Gunners urged to consider bringing an iconic former boss back to the club. After 22 years of loyal service in north London, a legendary Frenchman walked away from Emirates Stadium in the summer of 2018.Unai Emery was appointed as his successor and charged with the task of returning Champions League football to the club. He failed to deliver on that remit last season and is reported to have been given a limited budget with which to try and strengthen his squad.Getting deals over the line is proving to be tricky, amid links to the likes of Celtic full-back Kieran Tierney and Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba, but Nicholas believes Wenger could aid the cause. The former Arsenal forward told Sky Sports Transfer Talk Podcast: “Sometimes I like to throw one [an idea] in every now and then, like we all do.“It’s not just because I’m trying to be controversial but Arsene Wenger has been out of a job for a long time.“Now, Arsenal tried to keep him as a director of football or on the hierarchy because he can help guide us in case there was trouble that was going to be there for the club.“Bayern Munich have had [Karl-Heinz] Rummenigge and [Franz] Beckenbauer, Man Utd have Alex Ferguson, Liverpool have King Kenny Dalglish.“We missed out on that because Arsene said he wanted to take a break. But he’s been out of a job a long time.“I would have simply have said: ‘Well, why don’t you go after Arsene Wenger?’.“Wenger still knows the game inside out and people will say ‘well, he wanted to leave Arsenal’.“Yeah he did at that time as a manager, it was painful because he felt hurt and damaged. But I still think he loves the club.“If Arsene Wenger sits in a room with these different players that we are trying to attract, if he’s sitting in a room representing Arsenal Football Club, I think we’d get more of a say and more of a feel that they can generally attract these players.”Wenger has opened the door for a return to English football to be made, but claims to be in no rush to find another role after enjoying 12 months away from the dugout.

Games may be played on that day and on that time, but they are forbidden to be televised – with Saturday televised kick-offs mostly occurring at 12:30pm or 5:30pm.This rule has been implemented to encourage the attendance of lower-league games. And so, from 12pm each Saturday, Soccer Saturday gives running coverage and live commentary of the 3pm matches provided by the studio pundits, graphics showing updated live scores as well as insight by correspondents at the scattered football grounds across the country connected to the studio by video.High-profile incidents, often occuring in the Premier League, are described out loud by the studio panel who watch the events unfold through their own individual monitors. For the final 45 minutes of the programme the studio pundits discuss and recap the games they have been watching, and post-match interviews with players and managers are shown.Who are the Soccer Saturday pundits?Soccer Saturday has been presented by Jeff Stelling since 1994 (under its former name of Sports Saturday). The regular team of pundits and studio analysts include Matt Le Tissier, Paul Merson, Phil Thompson and Charlie Nicholas. How can I watch Soccer Saturday?Soccer Saturday is available to watch on Sky Sports News. What time is Soccer Saturday?Soccer Saturday airs from 12pm and lasts for up to six hours. ATHENS, GA – SEPTEMBER 29: Fans of the Georgia Bulldogs watch play against the Mississippi Rebels at Sanford Stadium on September 29, 2007 in Athens, Georgia. Georgia won 45 – 17. (Photo by Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images)Stetson Bennett transfer update: the Georgia preferred walk-on is officially leaving Athens. Bennett, a lifelong Georgia fan, found himself behind incumbent starter Jake Fromm, who led the team to the national championship game last season, and No. 2 recruit Justin Fields on the depth chart. He believes he is good enough to start for an FBS club.Kirby Smart revealed that the redshirt freshman was considering a transfer earlier in the week. Bennett served as scout team quarterback last season, and really impressed the coaching staff, and was set to be the third-stringer for the Bulldogs this season. There was also a chance that he’d be placed on scholarship.Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, whose unit had to face Bennett every week in practice, was effusive in his praise of the young quarterback. From The Telegraph:During the postseason, Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker was complimentary of Bennett’s ability to challenge his unit on a daily basis.“Stetson Bennett is a beast, man,” Tucker said. “Stetson Bennett puts a lot of pressure on our defense because he is extremely quick, he’s fast and he can throw. He can throw in the pocket and he can throw on the run, and he’s very, very competitive.”Now, the Stetson Bennett transfer is official.Bennett reportedly called the decision “the toughest of his life.” DawgNation spoke to him about the transfer:“The dream is to play,” Bennett said. “It was cool being at Georgia. I loved sharing those moments at Georgia last year but the dream is to play. It just wasn’t the same growing up a boy who wanted to play at Georgia if you are not out there. That’s the thing. It was cool. I would love to be the starting quarterback at the University of Georgia. But just being there and being on the team. That’s not good enough for me.”“I’m going to go play somewhere,” Bennett said. “I think that’s evolved to more of the dream than just being somewhere at a place because you grew up loving it. I think now the dream is to go play and go win championships somewhere. That’s what I feel like. I am going to go chase that dream now.”Bennett was a relatively unheralded high school recruit, but did have offers from schools like Georgia Southern, Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss, as well as some Ivy League options. Instead of looking at programs like that, he will go the junior college route, and hope to expand his options. He says head coach Kirby Smart has even assisted him in finding some good junior college options.“It was really nice,” Bennett said. “That just showed me more of what I already knew about Coach Smart. That showed me even if I wasn’t going to be here that he still cares about me and whatever I’m going to turn out to be.”[…]“I’m thinking somewhere in Mississippi,” he said. “I am going to take some visits out there. Or I already have visited them. I’m thinking it might be Jones Community College or Gulf Coast Community College.”This Stetson Bennett transfer has a much bigger impact than your average walk-on leaving a program. It leaves a very big hole in the depth chart behind Fromm and Fields, the program’s only two scholarship players at the quarterback position.[DawgNation]
